Time Management … for your wellbeing.

Time; how is it that we never quite have enough of it? Yet, if we had another 2, 4 or 6 hours a day would we be better rested or would we fill this extra time too? Time management is a tricky, yet popular topic in today’s busy schedules.

I am always so happy when people get in touch to arrange Coaching (usually after pondering for a while), even though they feel too busy already. It shows that deep down we recognise that prioritising our needs, development and time has to come higher up the list.

- The first step is recognising that we don't have to say ‘yes’ to every invitation, meeting or social event. Many of us have ‘people pleasing’ tendencies that can feel hard to override. Once we really value and respect our time it becomes easier to ask others to do the same.

- Review your boundaries; check where you are saying ‘yes’ to things because you truly want to and where you may be doing so from a place of obligation.

- Build in some time before responding; when you receive a request or demand on your time it's helpful to have a default response of ‘let me think about it’ or ‘I will get back to you’. This way you won't respond to the pressure of the moment.

- Take time to check-in on how you feel about the request; who is asking, will this absorb time you have saved in the diary for self-care? Is this a meeting you can delegate or be courageous and say ‘no’ to?

Putting boundaries in place can be a uneasy thing for some of us, but it is always worth it. People often respond better than we imagine and in time we get used to it and so do our friends, family & colleagues. It is your time so why shouldn't you have a clear view on how you spend it?

Time management sounds like ‘another thing to do’ but the pay off is worth it!
